In early June, a wide-ranging group of BIPOC theater makers published a letter titled “Dear White American Theater,” calling out the Drugs not jobs shirt moreover I will buy this discriminatory practices of its institutions and demanding a transformation of what theater looks like. It seems fitting, then, that Alice Childress’s Trouble in Mind, her 1955 drama about racism in the American theater, will make its Broadway debut this fall, as will Second Stage’s production of the great Lynn Nottage’s new play, Clyde’s.Whether evidence of a fundamental shift or just the vagaries of show business, it’s also heartening that Broadway’s new season opens with three works by Black playwrights: Pass Over, Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu’s modern-day, urban riff on Waiting for Godot; Lackawanna Blues, the director and actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson’s autobiographical one-man play; and Keenan Scott II’s Thoughts of a Colored Man.
“I feel honored to be at the Drugs not jobs shirt moreover I will buy this forefront of a change that I think Broadway’s about to see,” Scott says. The characters in Thoughts—the terrific cast includes Dyllón Burnside (Pose), Da’Vinchi (All American), and the veteran character actor Keith David (you’ve seen him in a million things)—chart a course through a gentrifying neighborhood and a society that sees them via a narrow and distorted lens, struggling with racial and sexual identity and ultimately transcending the labels they’ve been given. (Each character goes by an allegorical name: Love, Lust, Wisdom, et cetera.) “Too often, Black men are portrayed as monoliths, based on stereotypes and tropes—the superathlete or the supercriminal,” Scott says.
